Question

I have recurring bouts of stomach going in both ...

Sent to Health Experts July 12, 2006 2:47 p.m.

I have recurring bouts of stomach going in both directions at the same time. I had another bout this morning. It seems to hit me mainly in the mornings, but occasionally in late afternoon. I usually start by having to go to the bathroom.
The more I go, the more nauseated I get until I have to stand up and lean over the toilet to either dry heave or vomit. The vomit is uaully quite acitic....like I have crushed up aspirin in my stomach or something. I dont' notice any change in what I eat prior to this happening. I did have a colonoscopy and endoscopy but it only revealed a redundnat colon and a hiatla hernia. I searched online and thought I might have h pylora but the colonscopy doctor's nurse said the doctor tested me for this with the endo. I am tired of never knowing when this is going to happen or why. Do you have any suggestions for me???

Your answers to the following questions will need to offer you a better and more complete answer:

What is your height, weight, and gender?

How long have you had these symptoms?

Have you been to a doctor(s) about the symptoms -- if so, what did they say?

Over time, are the symptoms becoming more frequent -- less frequent -- or staying about the same?

Have you noticed any pattern about the symptoms -- such as what makes them start/stop -- get better/worse-- become more/less frequent?

Do you have any other health problems -- if so, what are they?

What, if any supplements/vitamins/over-the-counter medications/prescription medications do you take?

Thanks in advance.

Steve

Steve:

I am 5'10 and a half inches tall
I weigh about 195
I am a female
I have had these off and on (at no particular season or anything) for 15 to 20 years

Yes, I have been to a doctor and he recommended (and performed) a colonoscopy and endoscopy. When the test came back that I had a redundant colon and a hiatal hernia, he didn't really say anything else. So I asked him if either of those was making me sick. His only thought was that since I don't have a bowel movement every day, that the feces is probably backing up and making me have this problem. However, I have gone every day this week and still had the problem this morning.

Over time, the symptoms are occurring about the same. ...not getting better, and not getting worse. There was a time last November that I had it about three times in a week.
...except the vomiting seems to be more acidic.
I have noticed NO pattern in the symptoms. Oh yes, I forgot that I had also gone to a doctor about 3 years ago and all she thought was that I might be allergic to dairy products, but I can eat dairy with no problems.

I have no other health problems, except I had plantar fascia release and achilles tendon release surgery about a week ago. It was very painful to have this episode this morning when I can hardly stand up yet. I am racing between sitting on the toilet and standing up over it as both problems occur almost simultaneously.

I only take lipitor. Will be starting on vitamins to reduce scarring from my surgery this week.

Thanks

Thank you for implying.

First of all, let me give you a practical tip. Find a small bucket or something similar to keep by the toilet so that you will be able to deal with your problems simultaneously -- without all that sitting and standing. This will not only be more convenient, it will be safer -- election in possibility that you might fall and injure yourself.

When you say that you can eat dairy products with no problem -- does that mean they have gone without dairy products for a few days -- yet, saw no improvement in your symptoms? If you have not given this a try -- you should.

I suspect that your symptoms may be the result of more than one condition. Some ideas that come to mind are:

Wheat (gluten) allergy

Irritable bowel syndrome

Gallbladder problems

I think you need to explore these possibilities (and any others that occur to you) one at a time -- until you figure out what is happening to you. I would start with your constipation issue. Try increasing your liquid and fiber intake to see if that will help you become more regular -- and if doing so improves your primary symptoms. You can also try a Probiotic Supplement (available at any health and store) to help restore the natural balance of 'good bacteria' in your gastrointestinal tract. Keep a written log of when and what you eat -- and, when you have your symptoms. Sometimes patterns/relationships are more apparent when reviewing a written record covering several days/weeks.

I realize that you will not be able to explore all of the causal possibilities on your own. Explore what you can -- and, if you still are suffering, returned to the doctor armed with the information you have accumulated and let him or her taken from there.

Click above Link(s) (if any) for additional information.

Let me know if you need more input. If not, thanks for the opportunity to assist you... Please honor my efforts by Clicking the green 'Accept' button (located within this post -- above-right). Adding a bonus -- should you wish to do so -- would be warmly welcomed.

Good Luck!

Steve
