Hi, my daughter has been diagnosed with hypothyroidism. She is 27 yrs old. Has a 2-year old and a 4 month old baby. She experienced hypertension with both babies and it caused her to go into earlier labor and delivered both babies 2 1/2 weeks earlier than estimated due date. Both babies were normal weight normal overall. She however experienced with the first child losing an extreme amount of weight. Had her thyroid levels checked then and they were normal. 2 years later after having baby this last March 2nd, she now has symptoms of MS -- numbness/tingling in her toe, legs, racing heart -- an anxiousness that is overwhelming and even caused her to go to the ER on a weekend that she was camping at Okoboji with us and they checked her blood then and the thyroid was described as slightly elevated at that time and that she should follow up with another test when she got home. She had an MRI ordered by her doctor to rule out MS BEFORE the thyroid levels were checked again. MRI was negative but they only went from toe to chest. Now when blood tested again, her thyroid levels were extremely out of whack, her heart rate was very high for her 100 usually it is 70. Dr. said that because her thyroid is out of whack that it is effecting her hormones or vice versa. He said it could be temporary related to post partum hormonal changes or it could be long lasting. He is sending her to an encrinologist. She psychologically feels better just knowing that she truly has something wrong with her that its not all in her mind, but she is still having anxious symptoms. She was given a heart medication to help her heart rate and offered a sedative for the anxiousness but does not want to be doped up while caring for her young children. She is functioning with alot of effort. she is an RN and is actually working a 12 hour shift today as I write this. Her tasks at home are a big effort. Finally, my question. Our family had planned a family vacation the 2nd week in August 7-12 --the last time we can all be together for a long time -- to go camping up in northern Minnesota. Her doctor referred her to a specialist and the appointment they had open was August 8, the second choice was August 18 -- she has a wedding to go to that date. The third choice was Auigust 23. The receptionist helping her wanted her in sooner than that. She's available all of this month but no opening. she was put on a waiting list if there are any cancellations. Do you think we should cancel our camping so that she can get in to this specialist? I am concerned about cancer as I have that on my side of the family. My mom died of breast cancer spread to the bones and my dad died of colon cancer spread to the liver. No cancer with me yet I am 49 years old. My brother has had pre-cancerous polyps removed in the nick of time -- he is 4 years older than me.
What would be the worst scenario for her with this hypothyroidism that she has just now been diagnosed with?
