Question

Swollen ankles NOT in pregnancy.

Sent to Health Experts July 16, 2006 12:32 p.m.

I have been experiencing edema in my ankles lately to the point of where it is uncomfortable to wear shoes. I have had this problem once before several years ago but it included pain and was diagnosed as gout. There is no pain accompanying this go-round. I have also just moved from a town with an elevation of 4500 ft to a town that is only 3 ft above sea level....wondering if this could be a contributing factor.(?)...It does recede when elevated but I have not seen my true ankles in several weeks. If I push in on the swelling, it leaves an "imprint" that takes a few minutes to fill back in. I work in a sedentary job, however I exercise regularly at my local Curves facility. Any ideas or suggestions?? Diruretics?

In most cases this can be caused by a problem within your circulation or caused from fluid retention. It does sounds more like circulation if you push on the area and it does not bounce back immediately. Yes changes in the elevation can cause a change like this but it does not last for longer than a couple of weeks and then your body does become adjusted to the new surroundings. I would recommend that you be seen to determine whether this is due to your circulation which can be a sign of improper blood flow or if it is due to fluid retention which can be helped with the aid of a diuretic.

Relist: I still need help.
A few months ago (October 2005) I had a complete cardiac workup including echocardiagram and stress test along with a 24 hour monitor as I was experiencing missed or skipped heartbeats every now and again. They concluded that I was just hyper-sensitive to my body and could feel things that the normal person did not. They found 6 episodes of irregular heartbeat in that 24 hour period of monitoring but concluded there were no problems. As this probably is not a circulatory issue - unless something like that could rear it's ugly head unexpectedly - I have purchased an OTC diruetic and am taking 2 pills every 4 hours. When can I expect to get some relief from this? It has only been 8 hours or so and I am urinating blue (lol) but so far no relief whatsoever. Thank you for your time!!

I am sorry that I had to be away. You should expect to feel relief within the first 24 hours after starting this medication so if you have not had any relief as of yet then it may be that this is taking longer to show results or you need a prescription diuretic to fully allow proper regulation of the fluid retention. Yes you will have a blue tint to your urine but only take this as directed and see if you see some relief in no longer than 48 hours. If no relief is present at that time then you should contact your physician to see if they feel a prescription diuretic is what you need.
