My granddaughter who is 3 was just put on some medicine for acid reflux. She also just started using an inhaler for asthma. Two weeks after being on these meds she now has "white" stools!! According to doctor, the meds she is on would not cause this. I on't have the names of the meds, but what else could cause theses white stools???

One of the possibilities for seeing white stools in a child who has previously had darker stools is hepatitis, which is an inflammation of the liver. Hepatitis may be caused by many kinds of viruses ( hepatitis A, B, or C) and by reactions to drugs. A lot of youmg children and infants have hep. A that is not diagnosed because of the mild symptoms seen.

Another possibility is that the hepatitis may be the result of a reaction to one or more of the medications you mentioned. Some drugs prescribed for reflux have occasionally been connected with an onset of hepatitis. The medication needs to be stopped once it is determined that it may be causing hepatitis.

Whatever the cause, you should consult with your grandchild's physician. Bringing in a diaper for the doctor to see will be helpful. It is possible that what is looking "white" to you is just normal stool even though it's different from your grandchild's normal stool color.
