Sent to Health Experts July 31, 2006 5:14 p.m.

My daughter, aged 22, just found out she is 6-8 weeks pregnant. She has hypothyroidism and has not been taking her medication for the last 6 months (150 mcgs levoxyl 1x/day), and I understand from the research that this can be quite problematic for the fetus, even from the point of conception. Although she is restarting her medication at this point (will be prescribed by a doctor), we would rather know now rather than later what her chances of problems with the baby are. Thank you.

Hi

She is not likely to have any problems I'm pleased to say.

Not taking her medication may have made it more difficult to concieve but any problems after conception would really only occur in the second half of pregnancy.

Please see abstract in New England Journal of Medicine, July 15th, 2004 Vol. 351:241-249. We have concern about the fetus' brain development, and have found a number of references to this and other fetal development issues on web site searches. Would you please address this issue directly. Thank you.

You cannot extrapolate this abstract to an individual.

Very little of the fetal brain is developed in the initial stages of pregnancy.
The greatest risk of "damage" to any fetus is from week 12-13 onwards.
