I have a friend who was taking a number of medications for a couple of years. He is now weining himself off them. The medications are: Chlorthalidone, Alprazolam, and Effexor. He recently saw a psychologist and he is weining him off all of them. This person has just recently cut down on the chlorthalidone and the alprazolam. He is taking smaller doses like half/quarter of the tablet. He said he feels really sick - sore muscles, headaches, very low energy and is experience diarahea. Can this be caused from the slowing down of the pills? Also, he doesn’t eat right either. Takes these pills on an empty stomach and only eats larger meals in the evening. Can you please help?

I was on effexor. One needs to wean off very slowly,.The symptoms he has are all withdrawal and can last up to 4 months till his system gets back to normal.Nervousness, even mania sometimes can happen. If it gets too bad he can get ativan to help. The nausea can be horrendous, usually sucking on lemon or dried crackers help.If not he would need compazine. He is going to feel pretty crummy for awhile. The only thing is to wait it out.Maybe he will be one of the fortunate who gets rid of the drug out of their system in 4 weeks.Good luck.

Response to Karel1's Post: He hasn't really stopped the effexor as of yet. It is the xanax (aplrozolam) that he is weining off and the chlorthalodone. Will they give the same withdrawal symptoms?

Please let me know. Also, he doesn't eat properly. He takes all these pills on an empty stomach and consumes alochol on top of that.

Thank you.
