Persons with Hepatitis can expect to be tested every 6-12 months for liver disease. It also carries a higher risk of liver cancer. There are many new treatments that can keep these risk factors lower. You will need to change your lifestyle to minimize your risk for damage to your liver: smoking, drinking and using drugs should be avoided. Excercise and a balanced diet are important. Partnering with your doctor will help you traverse what can be a scary path. Give yourself time to process your diagnosis. It is big, but with all the advances in medicine Hep is no longer a death sentence. Get yourself into a support group so you can learn from the experience of others. Educating yourself is also important. There is a lot of good information on this web site:

Best of luck to you.

they are different strains of the virus. A and B are weaker than C. C is the most serious because you cannot be immunized against it and it is considered "incurable" although there are treatments now that will actually work for about 80% of hep C sufferers and eliminate the virus.

I have a good friend who had Hep C from a blood transfusion as a child and after a year of the most cutting edge treatment his viral load had been lowered from the thousands to down to nearly nothing--to the point where his doctor considers him cured of Hep C. It is very possible to infect your family through blood contact and body fluids... this makes it very important to wash your hands and to be aware of any cuts or open wounds you or they may have. Ask your doctor what precautions you need to take in your sexual relationships as well, as this is a very easy way to transmit the virus. Do not give up hope. Treatment is moving forward every day and making this a disease that you can live with and even live well with. Make your doctor your ally and you will thrive. Best of luck to you.
