Hello,

I'm not sure when you had your last colonoscopy, but the right sided pain that you have had for the last ten years, may in fact be diverticulitis or diverticulosis. You are a bit young for this to ocur, but not entirely out of the realm of possibility.

This should be detectable on colonoscopy. Treatment would include a course of antibiotics if you are having a bout of diverticulitis, which is an inflammation of the intestine, that's what causes the pain.

Of course, this is just speculation on my part you must understand. Your physician should be able to address this further for you.

If you have not seen a gastroenterologist recently, you may want to make an appt.

As for your continued heartburn, sometimes people get their gallbladders removed because of a mirad of symptoms including constant heartburn. Yet post op they find that they still have some of the very symptoms that prompted them to have it removed.

The best thing is to consult your physician which I am sure you probably have, and see if he can't prescribe a stronger dose of medication that might help the heartburn. I see that you are on Previcid currently, but the over the counter dosing is probably not enough for you. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diverticulitis

I hope that this will help point you in a positive direction, but if I can help further, please let me know.

The last scopping has been this month of August. I was afraid he might have stomach cancer because of his symptoms. He goes for a berium x-ray next week and I want him to go back to the Family Dr. to see if the prostate has went down. He had ulcerative colitis 8 years ago, but they said it is gone now. The scope only showed inflamation in both bowel and stomach area. I just wish he would get one good day. Any other suggestions?

Hi,

Ulcerative colitis is an autoimmune disease. An autoimmune disease is one in which the body's self defense mechanisms go into overdrive and start to attack good cells, or in the case of ulcerative colitis, it attacks the lining of the intestine.

This can cause diarrhea, constipation, cramping, rectal bleeding and a general feeling of malaise.

Medication for his inflammed gastrointestinal tract can go a long way to making him feel much better.

There are many medications on the market such as Pentasa for ulcerative colitis. He definitely needs to see a gastroenterologist for his G.I. problems if he isn't already.

If he has already seen a gastroenterologist and he didn't put him on any medication to quiet the gut, then you need to find another.

Specific to the enlarged prostate, I am concerned that at 30 years of age that the prostate is already enlarged. He needs to be evaluated by a "urologist" for complete evaluation and treatment. He should also have a blood test (PSA) as well.

I think that the first step in resolving his health issues will be to see a gastroenterologist who truly is interested in a thorough exam and evaluation and a urologist who will evaluate the cause of the enlarged prostate.

I would make appts with both as soon as feasible......hope this information proves helpful to you and points you in the right direction to good health.

Thanks again, I will schedule the berium x-ray tomorrow and call to make an appointment with the urologist. We get the biopsy back from the stomach Tuesday and it may be the same as the bowel, negative. That is about all we can do at this point. Also,I will ask for a blood test for cancer too, along with the PSA.

I'm not sure that a barium xray will tell you everything you need to know. Another gastroenterologist will be helpful and could review the procedure report on the colonoscopy that was done earlier this month.

A biopsy of the colon in several different locations will go a long way to identifying active ulcerative colitis.

Don't stop pursuing this.....there is an answer for you and the pain that you are having....keep the faith....

Good luck...wish you well.

Pamela,
I got the urologist for Sept. 26 at 3:15. Chuck doesn't want to miss any more work than he has to, because he doesn't get paid when he isn't working. I scheduled the bowel x-ray today too.
I will call about the biopsy's tomorrow from the endoscope and I assume they will be negative like the bowel ones. This prostate problem I understand can take along time to get straightened out to where you feel better. Yes, keep the faith is right, but when it is your own kid, you can't help but worry, since it has been so long and now worse.
Thank you again for your help and I will let you know what I find out. In the mean time if you have any thing you can find about what all the prostate does to the system when infected, please let me know.
I know when I had my sinus sooooooooooo bad and had them operated on I felt much better. They said, I would of been in isolation if I was just admitted to the hospital. My gut hurt and felt like it was falling out and I believe it was that garbage going through my system and being wrotten on top of it all. Chuck has bad sinus too and I thought if all this doesn't pan out, I will take him to my ENT and get his done also, and see if it makes a big difference. Well that I have written you books over the past few days, instead of a question, I will let you go. Thank you again. You did help and made me feel better in knowing what to ask and look for.

I know how concerned you are for your son....I have two of my own in their 30's and I never stop being a mom.

When you mentioned that your son had an enlarged prostate, I didn't realize that he was dealing with "prostatitis" which is an infection of the prostate. You mentioned that he was on medications for it, which are probably antibiotics.

It is important that you go to the urologist for this problem since it has been going on for too long. The reason he may not be getting better, is because the infection is not responding to those types of antibiotics.

Ask the doctor to check your son for MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staph Aureus). That is a very aggressive bacteria that is sensitive to only certain types of antibiotics.

All they need to do to see if he has it is to culture his urine, that's all, and get him on the right medication.

I hope that Chuck starts to feeling better soon and with a mom like yourself, I know that he will.

Pamela, I don't know what to click on to do a feed back. I just know you have helped me alot in understanding and knowing what to ask the Dr. in as far as tests go. I have already referred you to a friend. I think after the berium is done, I want him to go back to his family Dr. to see if the prostate has shrunk any and get him to refer him to the urologist. Because he can't get in till Sept. 26. This way he can get him in sooner. You have been a lifeline for me. Someone to be able to talk to and ease some of my anxitity. Thanks again. Janis
