Question

Twitching

Sent to Health Experts October 02, 2006 1:27 a.m.

Good evening! I had my retainer for my teeth adjusted on Tuesday. I noticed after that
a twitching - persistent/unrelenting under my left eye.

I wonder if there is something simple to do to alleviate this.

I've been resting over the weekend in case it is a stress issue.

Thank you!

P.S. Perhaps a prescription (OTC) could help.

rest, arnica ointment under eye

Hi Customer (name blocked for privacy),

The eye muscle twitching you have is called:

Blepharospasm. Here is a link that details all you need to know about it:

http://www.nei.nih.gov/health/blepha/index.asp

As mentioned there are no medications that are very successful in alleviating it. However, the vast majority (>90%) of cases will self-resolve within couple weeks. If it persists longer than that (or gets more severe), then botulinum toxin, or Botox injection, has been proven to be an effective cure. Of course, you would need to see an M.D. (preferably a Dermatologist) to have that procedure done.

Stress can definitely be an eliciting factor (physical or psychological), as can 'eye strain'; but in many cases, NO causative factor can be identified.

Hope this helps!

Best, --Dr. Steve, Your Online Family Doctor
