Sent to Health Experts October 05, 2006 11:34 p.m.

I was diagnosed with Prostititus(no bacteria showed up in the specimen) a little over a month ago and I started Cipro QD at first and have been taking generic Cipro 500 BID for the last 25 days or so. I had about every symptom including burning and frequent urination. I have bad days and good days and overall felt like I was really getting better until I started having some aching(pain level = 3/10) in my left testicle this afternoon. The urination has increased and the left side aches ever so slightly. I had a hernia at age three and the right side has always been higher due to the surgery. I felt my left side this evening and the testicle feels like it is slightly swelled up although I do not frequently check this area, my right testicle is appears much more normal. The burning is slight in my penis(pain level = 2/10) with or without voiding. I am concerned about the swelling though this is the first time I have noticed it. Thank you in advance for anything you can offer. I am going to schedule an appointment with the Urologist tomorrow.

Hello,

What other medicines are you on for the prostatitis? Were you diagnosed as prostatitis only or urinary tract infection?

He told me to take a anti-inflammatory like Motrin or Aleve TID or BID depending which drug I chose and today I took it for only the second time in over a month as I was not having any pain and urination had slowed somewhat. I started more frequent urination today and the aching began after lunch. I was only diagnosed with prostatitus as my urine was clean. I have no discoloration in my urine either. I don't know for certain that I am even swelled up as I do not normally check my testicles. I felt the right testicle because it was aching. The left testicle just feels more flexible(I guess that is the best word).

Hello,

Ideally you should have taken Motrin or Aleve twice daily for at least 5-7 days to decrease any inflammation. Prostatitis does have non-bacterial origins in which case the antibiotic would not have been enough to control the condition.

Prostatitis can cause slight swelling of either of the testes as the seminal vesicles that run from the testes to the penis run through the prostate.

If your prostatitis was diagnosed only on the basis of a clean sample of urine, then you need to take certain steps to decrease any non-specific urethritis or or urinary tract infection:

- Increase the amonut of water you drink to at least 10-12 glasses daily.

- Make your urine alkaline by taking a satchet of alkaliser (available OTC), twice daily. It is difficult for bacteria to grow in an alkaline environment.

- Make certain lifestyle changes. Jogging, heavy physical exercise, driving for long distances can irritate the prostate, leading to non-bacterial prostatitis. Please see here for other risk factors of prostatitis: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/prostatitis/DS00341/DSECTION=4

- Do not hold on if you get the urge to pass urine. Holding on to urine can cause increased low-grade bacterial infections.

- Take Motrin 500mg twice daily after food for at least 5 days.

- Take a multivitamin multimineral supplement to boost up your immunity.

I hope this helps.

Should I hold off on the Urologist until I see if this helps?

Hello,

I think you can give yourself one week and try this out. If the aching still continues, you should see the urologist.

I hope this helps.
