My 3-yr old, Bethany, has had a cough for about 3 wks. It sounds like she is coughing up phlem, but has not been able to actually spit out anything. There is no fever. She doesn't seem to have a runny nose, but is frequently wiping or picking her nose. We saw her doctor on Oct. 4 b/c she had developed a red rash all over her body. The doc said that the rash was just 'hives', and probably just came from a cold virus, which was also probably causing the cough. The doc told us to just take Benedryl. My questions are: Should I be concerned that she still has this cough? Should I keep giving her the Benedryl, if so, how much longer? Should we see an ENT doc instead?? What do you think this cough is caused by?

Thank you,

suzanne

Hello,

Post nasal drip , sinusitis and cough-variant Astma as a cause of this cough may need to be ruled out . I suggest to you to consult to ENT specialist and also follow up with her own doctor. You can continue Benadryl until the rash goes away.

Reply to V. Yetimyan   M.D.'s Post: The rash only lasted 3 days. I am out of town until Tuesday (away from our doc), is there anything else to do for her or give her? The benedryl doesn't really seem to help her cough.

Thank you,

suzanne
