Hi Sheryl: (I'm an M.D. who happens to have High BP, so I've personally tried most BP meds).
Toprol is in the Beta-Blocker family of meds--as a group, they probably have the MOST side effects (slowing heart rate; bronchospasm; sexual side effects; depression; insomnia, etc.)
As a group--the Least Side Effects (in my opinion)--occur amongst the ACE Inhibitor Family of meds; these include:
- captopril [Capoten] *
- enalapril [Vasotec] *
- lisinopril [Zestril or Prinivil] *
- quinapril [Accupril]
- ramipril [Altace]
* I would recommend any of these first three. I have been on lisinopril (myself) for past 3-4 yrs, without side effects. The only side effect I see w/ any frequency (among my pts) is a dry cough, in about 10% of cases.
