Question

having serve cramping, heaving bleeding, increased ...

Sent to Health Experts September 19, 2007 10:11 p.m.

having serve cramping, heaving bleeding, increased tiredness during menstral cycle. Had CBC and TSH which was normal and abdominal ultrasound that was normal.Endometrial 2 mm, Ovarian volume right 5.1 and left 9.1. I want a hysterectomy but MD 1st ordered birthcontrol pills. I'm 40 and smoke. During my visit he said that I did not need to take birthcontrol pills. I questioned the nurse when she called me. MD then ordered Provera or a Lap procedure. I was told this is up to me by the nurse and this was all MD could do for me. Menstral cycle is so severe at time I feel and can barely get out of bed. I don't trust this MD. Should I take the Provera?

Since you are online, could you please give some more information:

Since how long have you been having this bleeding?

Are you perimenopausal?

Hi,

Menorrhagia is usually treated step by step.

The first step is with medications. Here, the medicines used are NSAIDS, OCP's and Progesterone, like Provera.

In the second step, conservative surgical procedures like Endometrial ablation are done.

In the third step, Hysterectomy is done.

So it would not be advisable for you to think of a hysterectomy directly. You should try first with the Provera. If your bleeding is die to some hormonal abnormality, this might correct your bleeding. If this does not work, then you should consider the option of an endometrial ablation. If bleeding continues, then you need to go for hysterectomy.

So go ahead with the medicines first. This is the first step.

Thanks so much for this quick response. I felt that the Provera was okay. Will the Provera help with cramping? If this works I'm willing to take the medication but this MD will never touch me again. Is it normal to have a yearly checkup with the OBGYN and not have a urinalysis/lab?
