Beginning Sunday, I had heartburn that gave me pain when I swallowed. I started taking some Malox, but then switched to Prilosec after the first day. It feels a little better today, but I notice a tickling in my chest which causes me to cough sometimes. What is this a symptom of?

Hello Customer (name blocked for privacy),

Heartburn that is making you cough may not be heartburn any longer. Gastroesophogeal Reflux Disease (GERD) is essentially heartburn that has stuck around for a while, and has irritated the esophagus. GERD is caused by a reflux of stomach acids into the esophagus. Depending on how high the acids reflux, the pain felt will vary. The sensation of the reflux within the esophagus at chest level can indeed cause coughing as it is now irritated. The prilosec is effective OTC medication for heartburn, but should not be used long term without your providers awareness. If this keeps continuing, please see your provider for an evaluation.

Here is a helpful web link regarding GERD: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/gerd/DS00967/DSECTION=1

I hope I was able to help,

Sincerely,

Susan
