I have COPD. I had a chest x-ray 8/21/2007 which showed an infiltrate. Later I was admitted to the hospitalI am alergic to sulfa. I was given mucomyst which contains sulfa and now there is scarring in my lungs. is this permanent? Does the size of the scarring increase? Is it puomonary fibrosis? How do I know for sure? is there a test?

Hello,

Mucomyst is not a sulfa drug, so you can rest your mind about that part of your question. Pulmonary fibrosis involves scarring of the lungs in which scar (fibrotic) tissue takes over the normal lung tissue, which decreases the ability to exchange oxygen. This results in more difficulty breathing. It is usually permanent. Diagnosis of pulmonary fibrosis can be by x-ray, CT scan, bronchoscopy, broncial lavage or lung biopsy. Here is some more information.

Reply to Schuyler_ANP's Post: I asked at the hospital before I left did Mucomyst contain sulfa and was told yes. I questioned what I had been given because it smelled like rotten eggs. The RN and the technitian and all of the other nurses checked on the computer for ingredients and everyone told me how sorry they were that I had been given mucomyst because it did contain sulfa. Could I have the name of this drug wrong? It is given with albeuteral as an inhaler.
