I have unexplained urinary retention. I had bladder ...
Sent to Health Experts December 07 01:34 PM

I have unexplained urinary retention. I had bladder repair (they put my bladder in a sling) in mid September. Years before that I had problems with my bladder where I would go a little bit here and there, burning, pressure, felt like I had an infection but didn't. Since my surgery I have the same feelings but I really can't pee. I had a catheter in all last week-end. My urine samples come back clear, I started to go a bit for a few days, then stopped again. Yesterday I had a cystopoy? and the urologist said it could be just a combination of having surgery and a medication I've been taking since February called Lyrica that "have put me over the top" so he is sending a nurse out to show me how to self-catherterize and he will see me again in 2-3 months. This is not acceptable to me, I cannot go that long not peeing and cathertering, not being able to go anywhere....

I'm sorry it took me so long to reply, not feeling well and the nurse was here. I have fibromyalgia, that is why the lyrica. I take all kinds of medication. MS Contin, Oxycocet for pain. Trazadone and imovane for sleeping. Topomax for depression. Estrogen because I had a hystorectomy.

No, I'm 99% sure he did not take a biopsy, I am a smoker and cancer runs in my family, I am right now trying very hard to quit smoking.

No, I haven't had that imaging study.

It is very strange, sometimes I am retaining a litre of urine and I don't even feel like I have to go, other times I feel like I'm full and I only go 220 mls. It feels like a big muscle cramp when I go and sometimes it hurts so bad I can feel it right to the tips of my fingers and it brings tears to my eyes. I try to go before I leave the house and then as soon as I get in the car I have to go, sometimes I pull over to the side of the road and go. But right now sometimes I can go and sometimes I just can't.

I also had an ultrasound just to see if I was retaining urine last week. I haven't got the results but I know that I was retaining because the technician told me I had better try to go before I went home (1/2 hour drive) so I tried and couldn't but when I got home I peed 450 mls

In another instance the home care nurse put a catheter in and only got a tablespoon out, then 15 minutes later I peed 220 mls

Yes, thank you Frank. Sorry, I'm just a little cranky and not feeling well. The visiting nurse was here yesterday and today to teach self catheterization. They had a hard time and I did also, when we finally got "through" it felt like a barrier and there was a sharp pain. My stomach is bloated and hard. Don't know what that's about either. So yes I would appreciate it if you could talk to the urologists.

Now, I feel I can't leave the house because it's very difficult to do this catheter thing and I feel awful.

I forgot to tell you along with my meds I get lidocaine injections for fibromyalgia pain, sometimes intraveneously also. And my blood sugar has been steadily increasing over the last year, Last fall it was 4.2, now it is now at 5.4. One doctor wants me to start on metformin, another one doesn't. I have too many doctors!

I have since been back to my gynecologist who says my urologist says my bladder is expanding but not contracting so therefore he wants me to self-catheterize for 2-3 months and then see him again. I am having a terrible time with this, blood on the end of the catheter every time I try. Even a nurse is visiting my home and she is having trouble too.
I am thinking fo asking for a second opinion (another urologist) as I am not happy with this one. What do you think?
I also got the results of my ultra-sound that I had done a week ago, it showed a cystic mass posterior to the bladder, 2.6 cm in dimension that was not there in April. My gynecologist says this is likely just a loop of bowel???? The techician writes in her report that I should have an MRI to help clarify what this mass is.
I am just so confused right now and don't know what to do.... Please help me
