Hi there,

Tissue below adam's apple swollen at region of thyroid. Pain at one side, no difficulty swallowing.

I have been told by doctor that this sometimes happens when people go through meopause, but find this hard to believe. Thyroid function OK as I had it checked.

Jan,

If the swelling and pain is at the region of the thyroid, then you need to get an ultrasound of the thyroid as well as a CT scan of the neck. It is possible that you have a cold thyroid cyst - cold meaning that it is not affecting the function of the thyroid gland and the secretion of thyroid hormones.

Menopause does not cause swelling or pain of the thyroid. Occasionally if you lose a lot of weight, the adam's apple can look more prominent, but this is not true of the thyroid gland.

You do need to get your thyroid gland checked out.

I hope this helps.
