I was diagnosed 10/04 with ductal carcinoma in left breast which was treated with lumpectomy and followed by 33 treatments of radiation. I was then placed on tamoxifen in 1/05. I immediately ceased with periods, was told I had been thrown into menopause with the tamoxifen. No problem. I started to spot last fall in 2 separate months. I then had a biopsy and hysteroscope done in 2/06. A blood test said I was through menopause so I was taken off tamoxifen and put on aromasin 25mg. approximately 2-3 months ago. A week ago, I started to spot and proceeded to bleed fairly heavy (I use tampax super plus & had several run outs - unusual for me in all my years) for about 4 days. As of today the bleeding has subsided (regular tampax) but am still bleeding. Should I be concerned? Could this be caused by taking the aromasin and could the blood test have given a false reading as far as being through menopause?

Thank you

Dear Sue,
Given your age and your treatment profile, it is very likely that you have undergone menopause...
IThe blood test done for diagnosing menopause is to measure the level of follicle stimulating hormone, or FSH. During menopause, this hormone is elevated because the brain attempts to stimulate the ovaries, but they do not respond.
I personally do not believe that your problems are related to menopause, you need to be monitored for the possible side-effects of medicines. Of course you may get a repeat FSH done just to be sure...
