loss old lab

I have a question for my anatomy and physiology lab and I was wondering if you had any idea as to what this disorder is:

A 14 year old girl complained of fatigue and loss of stamina. her appetite is marginal. she weighs 96 pounds. her menstrual flow has always been heavy and long from the age of 12 (the onset). Her hematocrit is at 28%, her hemoglobin is at 9 g/dL. Her iron is 16 micrograms/dL. Bone marrow iron is absent and erythrocytes are small and pale. This information led me to think the disorder was thalassemia major or minor. But suggested treatment is stated as ferrous sulfate or ferrous gluconate for six months orally between meals. as well as a well-balanced diet and gynecological examination. do you have any idea or advice as to what this is?
