This does sound like a fatty tissue lump associated with the menstrual cycle but since your cycles are changing now it may be also that you are starting to go through pre-menopause. If you have not had a mammogram lately it would be recommended as now that you are past the age of 40 it is recommended every year. I have lumps myself now before my cycles and I used to never have them either and am now going through pre-menopause myself. But it is very important anytime that you feel an abnormal lump that you have it checked out so that is what I would recommend especially if you have not had a mammogram in the last year.
