I have been on my period for about 4 months

I have been on my period for about 4 months continuously non-stop. My last regular period was about 8 months ago, and I did not have a period for 4 months. During this lapse in a period, I visited my gynecologist and she stated it was stress and to see if it comes on by itself. Well it did, and I have not been off ever since. What should I do?
