Question

I'm 20 years old and I missed my period.

Sent to Health Experts July 17, 2006 12:21 p.m.

I'm 20 years old and I missed my period. My periods are every 28 days and I have never missed a period my whole life. The last time i had my period was June 1st. I took HPT and they came back negative. I had a blood test done the week I was supposed to get my period and it came back negative. I did have unprotected sex in June. Could I be pregnant because I was told people don't normally find out they're pregnant until after they miss their period twice? Can you help me? - anonymous chick

Hi,

There are numerous reasons why your menstruation cycle can run late, Pregnancy and stress being the most common.

Since you get a negative result, make sure you repeat the test in two weeks to make sure. Sometimes the pregnancy hormone isn't detected for a few weeks. You also should consider whether or not you've recently been sick, gained or lost a significant amount of weight, have been under excessive
stress or have taken any new medications. All of these things can affect your menstrual cycle and cause you to have irregular periods.

I would bring it up at your next doctors appointment, if you miss another cycle it is a good idea to set up an appointment with your doctor to determine the cause and begin any needed treatments.

I haven't been under any stress at all and even when I am under stress, I still get my period.

Hi,

Unfortunately stress is not the only cause of missed menstruation cycles though it is a common one. In some women the pregnancy hormone is low and slightly harder to detect so i is possible that you are pregnant. I would strongly recommend waiting at least another week and taking another test, make sure you do it first thing in the morning as the hormone is heavier at this time in your urine. If you are using a digital test I would suggest a regular blue strip test as they are more accurate and the digitals have a record of giving false negatives and false positives.

If you still get negative results and you miss your next cycle you need to speak with you doctor or OBGYN to determine the cause.

Walter

PS: If you have recently started a birth control method such as the pill or the shot or other medications these can interfere with your cycle.

Hi,

Well it sounds like it is not any of the common problems. It would be impossible to pin point exactly what is causing the problem without doing blood tests and a examination.

You really need to set up a appointment with your doctor to determine what is causing the problem if you miss another cycle.
