Question

Abdomen Pain...

Sent to Health Experts September 03, 2006 7:01 p.m.

Hello, I have been having this sharp pain in my lower right abdomen. I have had this feeling off and on for about 5 years now. At times it feels like appendicitis but it is lasting for too long. I can feel a small marble shape lump...but have been told that it may be my glands and that I have a yeast infection (which has lasted for quite sometime--off and on). My symptoms include: intermitten sharp pains, recently nausea, can become dizzy very easily, and can go days without feeling hungry or eating. I do not sleep well at night, but yet I always feel tired. Sometime the pain can last subtle for days sometimes very painful but goes away, if I put my knee to my chest it relieves the pain. Would you know what may be wrong?

Note: I am not pregnant, or on any medications of any sort.

Hi Rebecca-

Does the pain tend to correlate with any particular time during your menstural cycle (e.g., a week or so after you stop bleeding)?

Do you have regular menstrual cycles? Do you tend to have heavy periods?

Have you been treated for the yeast infection?

Thanks,
Emily

The pain does not seem to follow any pattern as far as I know of. My menstrual cycles have always been regular,(always the same time of day-giving and taking a couple days the same time of month since I started. My period's heaviness does not follow any pattern as well. I have taking one time medication for my yeast infection but it was a long time ago and did not help. Since then I still have the pains off and on, and seem to still have the yeast infection as well.

Thanks for the information.

You need to go to your doctor asap to get things checked out.

First - You may not actually have a yeast infection, and instead have a bacterial infection (which mimics the symptoms of a yeast infection but tend to stick around longer). The good news is that there are excellent doctor prescribed medications that can clear up both yeast infections and bacterial infections. Ideally, after seeing your doctor and beginning treatment, you won't have any more problems with this after about a week.

Second - The pain you are experiencing could be from a few things. While the "lump" you describe could definitely be a lymph node, it may also be your ovary. I asked about when you experience the pain because there is a fairly common, yet not well known, condition called mittelschmerz - pain during ovulation. It can be very painful in some women, and last for a week or two every month. For more information, see:

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/mittelschmerz/DS00507

The pain may also be from endometriosis or an ovarian cyst - both are fairly common problems in women which requires medical attention. For more information, see:

http://www.4woman.gov/faq/ovarian_cysts.htm

You need to discuss your pain with your doctor or ob/gyn specalist. Ideally you should have an ultrasound done (and possibly other procedures) to see what the cause of the pain is.

If you have further questions, feel free to ask!

Sincerely,
Emily
