Question

Hello,I am going on 42 years of age and have a 28 day

Sent to Health Experts September 22, 2006 4:28 p.m.

Hello,
I am going on 42 years of age and have a 28 day menstral cycle. This month it was two days late, probably due to stress. For some unknown reason I am having more fatigue, bloating and discomfort than usual. While my period usually has a medium flow for two days, I am on my third day of with a constant flow with many clots. I do not recall clotting since the time shortly after I gave birth to my son eight years ago. What would cause all this clotting. My annual Gyn. exam last June showed not signs of any problems.

Thank You,

Hello

This could be merely because you were a few days late. Sometimes our periods are more severe. It could also be because you might be starting perimenopause. This causes our cycles to change for up to 8 years before we reach menopause.

Thank you Kerry, but I would like to say that this is a rapid change from not experiencing clots to having clots for three entire days, this to me seems like a vast change rather than slow and progressive as would be the case if perimenopause is occurring. Do you agree?

Thank You,

Hello again

Yes, it is a rapid change. You will want to see your doctor. The reason our menstrual blood usually doesn't clot is because there is a chemical in it that inhibits clotting. However, once the blood hits air, it will still clot. I've not heard of this ever being a symptom that something is wrong, unless it is a symptom of a change in hormones and chemicals.
