I am a nursing mother of a 9-month old. I got my first post-partum menses after 7 1/2 months and the second 27 days later. My period this month is 5 days late and a home pregnancy test is negative. Is it possible that my ovulation/menses is suppressed or delayed due to the nursing? (not using any method of contraception)

Hi,

There are numerous reasons why your menstruation cycle can run late, Pregnancy and stress being the most common.

If you have been sexually active you should take another Home Pregnancy Test to determine if Pregnancy is the cause. Make sure you do it first thing in the morning as the Pregnancy Hormone is at it's highest at this time.

Should you get a positive result you will need to speak with your doctor about beginning prenatal care.

If you get a negative result, make sure you repeat the test in two weeks to make sure. You also should consider whether or not you've recently been sick, gained or lost a significant amount of weight, have been under excessive stress or have taken any new medications. All of these things can affect your menstrual cycle and cause you to have irregular periods. Since you are breast feeding this may be the cause of your delayed cycle. Often your menstrual cycle can become sporadic while breastfeeding ass a new baby and all the little worries and stress a new mother has and you can see the reasoning behind a late or missed cycle.

I would bring it up at your next doctors appointment, if you continue to miss cycles it is a good idea to set up an appointment with your doctor to determine the cause and begin any needed treatments.

If nursing will cause sporadic menstrual cycles, when does a 'normal' cycle return for the majority of women (assuming that weaning has occurred)?

Hi,

Once you stop breast feeding completely most women (Keep in mind all women's body's are different) see a return in about 4-6 months. Though it is not uncommon for a women who had a regular cycle to notice a more sporadic cycle after childbirth and or breastfeeding.

I would recommend waiting until you are a full two weeks late before retesting for pregnancy. If you do not get your next cycle and it is still negative I would recommend speaking with your doctor to make sure everything is as it should be.
