Question

My girlfriend and I are sexually active and doing as much ...

Sent to Health Experts November 20, 2007 7:28 a.m.

My girlfriend and I are sexually active and doing as much as possible to negate the possibility of pregnancy - I withdraw prior to ejaculation. My question: Is the possibility of pregnancy reduced IF I use a spermicidal foam/cream during the first five to 10 days AFTER the completion of her menstrual cycle?

Optional Information:
Male, Age: 42, Ohio

Already Tried:
We tried the pill, but she developed reactions to it, we tried condoms but they tend to break due to my size, and we are looking into spermacidals.

Hi,

The failure rate of spermicidal foam is around 15 to 29 % .

Also another options to consider are Today sponge .Today® Sponge is 89% to 91% effective .The contraceptive sponge combines barrier and spermicidal methods to prevent conception .

Also a gynaecologist can be consulted for discussion on IUD .An intrauterine device, called an IUD for short, is a small, plastic, T-shaped device with a string attached to the end. The IUD is placed inside the uterus to prevent pregnancy.

What I'm looking for is more a "statistical" answer.

I don't think she ovulates that soon after the end of her menstrual cycle, and I have heard "rumor" that the first 10 to 15 days after the end of a menstrual cycle is a "safe window" where I could ejaculate inside her.

I guess it all comes down to how many days after her cycle is it before she ovulates.

If she doesn't ovulate until approximately 14 days after her cycle, and I used spermacidal foam during that time period between the end of her menstrual cycle and ovulation, would that give me a "10-day safe window" where I could ejaculate inside her with "relative" safety?

I realize that there is still a possibility of pregnancy, and that the 100%-effective method is sterilization.

The rumour you have listened is not right .
Infact around days 10 to 15 can be infact fertile period .

Also the timing of ovulation can vary in every cycle due to various factors like stress ,anxiety etc .So this is not very reliable method of birth control .
