I am 18 and I have always had severe cramps ever since I began my period (around age 13). I was put on birth control to try to tone them down, and that worked to the point that I wasn't immobilized, but I was still having pain. I have just recently moved out onto my own and I haven't been able to get birth control because I can't afford it. Now, when I start my period I have the same severe cramps, but I also feel nauseous for the first hour and sometimes I have constipation/diarreha. Is this normal?

Hi, Nausea and diarrhea are normal. Constipation is probably not related to your menstruation . To prevent constipation you can increase the amount of fiber in your diet , drink at least 6 cups of water a day and take laxative like Colace tablet at night.

Hi, You can do the following to alleviate the symptoms:

  • while menstruating, refrain from drinking caffeinated drinks such as coffee, tea, cola or cocoa.
  • avoid stress. Relaxation and massage can work .
  • exercise and staying fit can help prevent painful periods.
  • keep your abdomen warm.
  • use pain-relieving medicines if necessary.
