Brown period with lots of small clots what does this mean?

I am a 27 yr old with abnormal menstruation which is normal for me but this period is different from any other i have had. My question is i have had blood flood for a week but it is not the normal reddish color instead it is brown with lots of clots mostly small what is this a sign of?
