Question

If I am not having a period am I ovalating?

I was on the pill for about 3 years. Got off of the pill at 17 got pregant. After I had my daughter in '99 I got on the Depo shot. I was on it for 5 years got off never started my period. Got back on the shot of a year in a half. I have problems with insurance covering the shot. I can't get back on the pill until I have period which my DR said could be never. My question is: If I am not having a period am I ovalating?

Periods or menstruation is the normal byproduct of the female cycle when a released egg is not fertilized. There is change to hormone levels which trigger the shedding of the lining of the uterus that we see as menstruation.

Without a regular period then it is unlikely that you ovulate however we cannot say this absolutely without ultrasound evidence to show lack of follicle development. Also if you are not currently taking something then you could suddenly ovulate and become pregnant without reaching the menstruation part of the cycle. Rare but it could in theory happen.

So, just to recap. Without a period then it is highly unlikely that you are ovulating however blood tests or ultrasound would confirm this absolutely.
