Mold found behind wall of fireplace in the home

Sent to Health Experts July 13, 2006 12:45 p.m.

We have a fireplace in our family room of our home. It is a brickwall and mantel and harth. We noticed a very distinct odor in the house for a while but did not know where it was coming from. With the heavy rains we have been having in our area we stated noticing inside the fireplace it was soaked, we know since have seen water running down the face of the brick and called someone to come and look at it. They told us that we have a hole outside where the chimney is and that behind the brick wall is all mold and mildew. My question is, is this mold dangerous to us, we have 2 children, a 20 month old and a 4 year old. My house has a very severe musty smell now and we are just waiting to have this hole repaired. Do we also need someone to come in and remove the mold?
Thank you,
Robin
