Can a nurse give answers to a question over that ...

Can a nurse give answers to a question over that phone. I had a bi-ospy on my thyroid nodule. The nurse said I had to come in and talk to the doctor. Can the nurse or a doctor legally give this information over the phone if I request it. Does this mean something is wrong when they said I had to come in?
