How do I go about finding a Primary care physician? I have not had a physical in years, and have some female concerns I need addressed (I am 43), and experience anxiety when I go for exams, treatments, or tests. Having blood drawn is especially difficult. I have been in contact with a physician's assistant for a minor problem. he seems very helpful, concerned for me, and actually understands my anxiety and pays more attention to me than my weight or my chart! but, is a PA qualified to be a PCP? what are the pros and cons of choosing one for primary care, versus having a gyno perform primary care, as some women do?

Hi

These are very good questions and even though I'm a nurse I share some of your anxieties! I like that clay idea actually!

A PA is not a replacement for a PCP. You will need a PCP to perform yearly physicals and keep over sight of your health. A PA is good for seeing you between those physicals, and then they are to report any unusual findings to the PCP.

Do you have insurance? That would be the place to start when finding a doctor. You will need one that is approved by your insurance. You can call customer service at your insurance company and they will send you a list of physicians they approve of that are near your home.

If you don't have insurance, I would ask friends you can trust who they like as a doctor.

I hope this helps!
