How do I begin losing weight, fast?

I have given up smoking and have since put on 1 stone. I am 149lbs at 5"5' and my weight is increasing rapidly. I am depressed because I have put on the weight and am tempted to start smoking again. I want to lose weight, possibly 2.5 stone to be at my lowest BMI and need some guidance. I don't feel that diet advice should cost money - not good advice anyway. Can you help me please?
