Hi, My girlfreind is a nurse and was just told that a patient she was in contact with has Meningitis now all the nurse's that were around this patient have to go to a meningitis education seminar then for a precautionary measure all have to take a very strong antibiotic. My question is, I will be visiting her over the Memorial Day weekend, this antibiotic they have to take is a 2 day course starting today 5/25/06 I will be getting there on the 27th, Sat. Do I have a chance of contracting this if there is a lsim chance she did have it? Can it be transmitted sexually, or by kissing or just being in her presence? They said it's a 99.9% chance any of these nurse's contracted this and the medication is just precautionary, but Im nervous about this now. Any input from you would ease my mind. Thank's, Russ

You have nothing to worry about. Enjoy your weekend. As she will have already been on the antibiotics, there is no risk of you contracting menigitis from her. It is also doubftful that she has contracted it.

Thanks, but I read about meningitis and it said that it can be spread by kissing. Also, I made a mistake. this patient doesnt have meningitis , but she tested positive as a carrier. She went in for hip surgery, so I was told that her pre-op blood test's didnt show this because a blood culture needs to be done to expose this condition, I would like to know what prompted them to do a blood culture on this patient in the first place? Thank's, Russ
