Question

my baby won't eat much at a time then falls

Sent to Health Experts September 19, 2006 8:27 p.m.

my baby won't eat much at a time then falls asleep and wakes up about 30 minutes later screaming. all day long she bites at me like she is starving, even after she has just ate. I don't think she is teething, she is only 15 weeks old. She also at night will only sleep a couple of hours and then wakes up in a panic not just a cry but like she is terrified of something. what can I do? I have tried cereal in a bottle at night to help but so far it has not changed anything. I am tired and frustrated, do you have any advice for me? She is breast fed and will be 4 months old on the 22 of this month. thanks

Hello,

Has your baby been healthy and growing normally?

When did she start biting and waking up at night more?

I'm asking questions to get a better idea of what might be going on.

She is growing normal she is about 40% for her height and 50% for her weight. She does have acid reflex but she is on zantac for it. It started about a week ago that she has not been sleeping and waking up in panics. She has been biting at things like she is starving for about two weeks, I thought her acid must have been worse but I have really watched what I eat and her bed is tipped up and the cereal.

I know you mentioned you do not think she is teething, but in fact she is at the very age that teething begins! It really sounds like that is what is going on. The first teeth to appear should be the bottom front 2 in the middle.

At the same time she is probably going through a growth spurt and really wants to eat more but every time she starts to nurse it hurts her gums where her teeth are trying to break through.

Two things you can do:

  • Buy some of those plastic water filled teething rings and keep them in the refridgerator so that she will have something cold to bite on. Let her bite on them as much as she needs to.
  • Use Orajel on her gums before she nurses. This may ease the pain and allow her to get through a feeding so she'll fill up. You can try Orajel at night also, just be sure and only use it as often as recommended on the tube.

I know this is a trying time. Is there someone else in the house that can get up at night with the baby once so you can get a little more sleep? Are you able to nap when your baby does? Or, after you nurse her, can you hand her off to someone else to watch and go take a nap?

If I can be of further help, please let me know and I will be glad to!
