Sent to Health Experts November 25 11:17 PM

My husband's 8 yr old daughter has been having involutary leg shaking in her right leg shortly after she has fallen asleep 4 times over the past 5 days. There is history of seizures in her father's past however, it doesn't seem like she is having a seizure. She coherant during the episode, never experiences any pain during or after, and her muscles are not ridget. The first time that this happened, she went to the emergency room and all tests came back fine. What could be causing this?

Hello,

If the investigations to rule out seizures are negative than other possibilities include RLS ( Rest less leg syndrome )and PLMS (Periodic Limb meovement in sleep )

I am aware of both of the possiblilites that you gave me, however, this seems to be more than just RLS or PLMS. These episodes actually wake her up and she gets really scared and starts to cry because she cannot stop the movement for about 30 to 45 mins constant and then it stops. It's alomost like she is having a cramp in her buttocks that is causing her leg to jerk back and forth, however she experiences no pain. She also seems to me more sleepy since this has started to occure and she's not eating normally either.

I'm not completely aware of all test that were run, however, she has had two CAT scans and neither one showed any evidence of a seizure. She has not seen a neurologist. They are going to run a EEG tomorrow on her and an MRI on her leg. After I e-mailed you last night, her mother took her to the emergency room because she had another episode and that's when the second CAT scan was performed and again it came back negative. They requested the EEG and MIR.

As I stated in an my first e-mail, it doesn't appear as though she's actually having a seizure. I was able to talk to her and she responded to my questions that I asked her while it was happening. It's alomots like she's having a violent muscle spasm (her leg moves back and worth about 3 to 4 inches uncontrollably). My mother-in-law said that my husbands seizures were not like that.

I also have a cousin who has been a nurse for several years in the pediatrics unit and I spoke with her today in great detail about it. She said that she thought that it could be psycho-simatic due to "stress" (unfavorable situtation). She said that a lot of times if there is something going on that upsets a child and it is held in, that it's not unusual for that "stress" to present itself like that in a child. She said that it's actually very common. Is this a possibility?
