I am scheduled to undergo a colonoscopy on 12/29. Today, I called my hematologist to ask her how I should adjust my coumadin intake (which, currently, is 5.5 mg a day).

My hematologist said that she thinks I should not have the colonoscopy due to the risks (I assume she is referring to the possible bleeding).

I disagree with her, especially given the fact that my mother is also on coumadin (and a higher dose at that) and has had a colonoscopy and other procedures as well.

What do you think? Please help.

Typically when someone has a colonoscopy and they are they come off the coumadin a couple days before the procedure and afterward you can start to take it again. Sometimes people are put on Lovenox afterward as well to help reduce the risk of a blood clot. This is not universal. The lovenox is usually used for 4-5 days while your coumadin levels normalize. Although some doctors would just have you take the coumadin and not use the lovenox. If you are at high risk for clotting disorders they may be more likely to use the lovenox.

So if you are going to have the procedure done you are going to have to coordinate with your hematologist for this. Unless one of the other doctors wants to take this responsibility but I don't think they would want to assume this responsibility.
