I am a nursing student with a previous DUI. Will this effect my eligibility for licensure as an RN?

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Dear Just,

If this happened when you were underaged, it probably won't affect licensure. It will all depend on the state you live in. Go to your state's Board Of Nursing Website, and look up the application process and see what they say. You can always call them anonymously, just don't be untruthful on your application-if it is found out you would lose your license. They will do a background check.

If you are someone who has a problem with alcohol or drugs, you need to seek treatment before taking care of patients and being exposed to temptations of their medications. Most BON have a program for the impaired nurse, if this behavior should be a problem for you later on.

Thanks for writing JA, take care, Paula
