Question

my son who is 12, has been having trouble with his

Sent to Health Experts October 16, 2006 6:49 p.m.

my son who is 12, has been having trouble with his heart. I will discribe the feeling: His heart feels like it swells, needles pushing in it and it feels like it stops beating for about 17-25 seconds. I have been keeping records of if it happens after he eats, plays a sport, and how long they last. In June he went for a sports physical and she replied to the symptoms as he is growing. On Friday he had an EKG and it came back normal. These problems have be going on for two years, but this month we have had 4 episods. I do not buy that it is growing pains.

Unfortunately, childhood is no guarantee against heart problems. Another truth is that hearts with problems do not always act up on cue -- meaning that a 'clean' EKG is no guarantee that no heart problem exists.

Given the fact that your son continues to have symptoms -- and that they are often associated with physical exertion -- I believe that your concern is understandable and appropriate.

I suggest that you ask your son's doctor for a referral to a pediatric cardiologist -- or that you contact one directly and make an appointment for your son. If nothing shows up at the cardiologist office -- specifically request that your son be fitted with a cardiac halter -- which is a constant EKG monitor that is worn 24 hours a day by a patient -- increasing the chances of 'catching' problems which occur during normal activities.

Good Luck!
