my week old has a significant amount of mucous presumably

My 5 week old has a significant amount of mucous presumably from "just a cold" according to the pediatrician 2 days ago. Can he choke from mucous and is it worth taking him to the ER, or is there more risk of him catching something there and can they even do anything for him?

Female , Age: 5 weeks

Already Tried:
humidifier. he seems to only be happy when his mother holds him, thus keeping him upright. we've asl otried the saline solution in the nose and sucking it out.
