Is it a problem if a bruised area (cheek area on 6 yr old) still has more of a blue (not yellow or green) area (much, much smaller than original bruise) after 3 1/2 weeks? The area also has a hard little lump if you touch it, and there seems to be a bit of dimpling (that wasn't there before). The area was iced at the time of injury, and swelled for several days. Just want to know if this is typical, or not typical (needing a pediatrician to look at it). Thank you. Tracy. Cincinnati

It bruised somewhat along the jaw line (but a little under it too), and swelled up on the fleshy part -- he looked like a little chipmunk for about 4-5 days (the last couple just a little bit swollen). He said when he hit his train table that the cars around the train (match box size) "jumped up."

It was tender to the touch for about the same amount of time. He complained about the pain just for the first two days. No jaw or eating problems even from the initial time it happened. He says now that when he pushes up on it it still hurts a little, but a direct push, or pushing it down doesn't hurt.

If this bruise has lasted for three and a half weeks and it was just match box size train cars that hit this area then I would have it looked at as any bruise that does not go away within a reasonable amount of time should be checked out. If you also iced the injury that should have promoted healing and it honestly would be better to have it checked out to make sure that it did not actually crack the jaw line and that there is no underlying illness causing the bruising to continue on for such a long period of time. From how you state the injury happened three and a half weeks and still showing a bruise is not typical and it would be better to have his pediatrician look at the injured area.
