We just moved and our 6month old baby has met his new doctor today. The new Pediatricin was a little rough and brougt up an issue that we feel may be unjust. His original Pediatrician was very careful, concerned, took too much time if there is such a thing but always was very through. My baby, like his dad (me) has a round head andthe doctor asked if his head was always that way? Not a good introduction. He also said he wanted x-rays because he felt his soft-spot may be almost closed and it's too early for that. I'm not trying to discredit but I'm not happy about the information. Can you expand on what may be an actual concern or an old school protocol.

Sometimes when a new person steps into the picture, they notice things that look unusual that others haven't noticed because they've happened so gradually. There may be a subtle difference in the way your baby's head looks from how you and your husband perceive it to be because you are used to your "round heads." The concern with misshapen heads or with fontanels (soft spots) closing too soon is that the baby's brain still has some growing to do. You want to make sure the cage it's in (the skull) can grow also to accomodate that brain growth. If it doesn't there could be serious outcomes incuding delayed development, and possibly life-long issues. I am sure you don't want that for your baby, so why not just go along and have additional studies done to be sure. There is nothing invasive about x-rays and the other tests he will probably suggest. Just make sure if the baby is to have more than a few x-rays, that they cover his body to prevent issues such as damage to bone marrow, thyroid, sex organs. Thanks for the oportunity to help.
