My 1 year old grand daughter has small bumps and red areas appearing on her skin, first on her stomach, then her legs, arms and her ears. Should she go to the hospital?
Thank you

Reply to HealthGuru aka Emily's Post: She's whiney, and is scratching at her tummy periodically. My daughter first noticed them this evening about 10 30. Her husband did not notice anything on her prior. We have not taken her temp, I will check with my daughter to see if she has a thermometer.
Thank you.

Hi Customer (name blocked for privacy)-

My answer would depend on whether she is running a temperature. If she is, even if it is moderate, you should call her pediatrician immediately (if she doesn't have a regular pediatrician, or if you can't reach him/her, you should go ahead and take her to the ER). If her temperature is normal, and if she doesn't appear to be in distress, she could wait to be seen until tomorrow. If she IS in distress or is noticeably uncomfortable, go ahead and call her pediatrician now (or again, take her to the ER if her pediatrician is unavailable).

Unfortunately there could be a few different explanations behind her symptoms. For example, if she wasn't vaccinated against the chicken pox, this could explain her symptoms. She may also be suffering from a rash or allergic reaction to something she came into contact with during the last few hours.

The bottom line: Don't hesitiate to call her doctor or take her to the ER if (a) she has a fever, and/or (b) she appears to be in distress.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Sincerely,
Emily

Reply to HealthGuru aka Emily's Post: Emily,
This is so weird. My daughter has applied 20% zince oxide all over the baby and for the most part, the blotches, spots have cleared except for a few places. She doesnt have a fever and doesnt seem to be in too much distress. My daughter said she is whiney because she is sleepy.
Thank you.

I'm glad to hear this!! Most likely your grandaughter was suffering from an allergic reaction to something. Keep an eye on her the next day or so.

Best regards,
Emily
