My sisters daughter who is 2 had a temp of almost 102 starting on thursday. She had a slight runny nose on and off. And her temp seems to be low grade still. She woke up this morning with rash on chest and whelps on her legs. Her pediatrician was called on Friday and said lets just wait to see if her fever goes away so she is not sure if she should call him or not. What do you think this sounds like?

Reply to Dr. Sandra's Post: No hair line and behind ears are clear and no discharge. The splotchy rash on chest and the whelps are bright red and big starting right above knee on one leg and goes down and on the other leg just on ankle.

Hi, the onset of low-grade fever and the description of rashes, it seems that it can be 'roseola infantum' or 'erythema subitum'. It is a mild viral infection(herpes 6 or 7) characterized by fever with rash. It is treated symptomatically like you may give acetaminophen for the fever. Donot give aspirin. I think you cab talk about this to the paediatrician and take the doctor's opinion. Since there are no rashes on the face, it is unlikely to be measles and as there are no blisters, it is unlikely to be chicken pox.

Reply to Dr. Sandra's Post: If it is this is it contagious to adults and other children who are between 8 and 14.
