I think the first problem may be trying to drive 'perfectly'. My instructor gave me confidence when he told me that the test was not about being a perfect driver but being able to show that you are a safe and competent driver who is safe enough to drive solo and build up experience over time. In the end I passed first time despite stalling the car on a hill at a busy junction!
So for you, think about what makes you a safe driver. Awareness of traffic and pedestrians around you. That will include use of mirrors and checking your blind spot. The practicalities of using the car are technical skills which I'm sure you are well versed in if you are thinking of booking your test. So we will take these as read.
A few relaxing techniques include the use of meditation tapes and use of positive mantra Eg "I am a safe and confident driver!"
If you need additional help then Bach Rescue Remedy is really good for pre-test nerves. 4 drops on the tongue or in a glass of water work well.
Here are some other herbal remedies that I recommend for stress/anxiety:
Siberian ginseng tones the nervous system and increases your resistance to stress.
Herbal tea infusions of lime blossom, catmint, lemon balm or chamomile have a calming effect. Personally I like chamomile or cinnamon. They are an aquired taste but stick with them.
A herbalist may suggest taking skullcap, valerian or cowslip as stronger relaxants.
Valerian is probably the one I would try first. It is available in tablet form and can be used both during the day and in larger doses at night time.
Your pharmacist should be able to get valerian or you might get in on the net.
Good luck with the test!
