I have been experiencing the following: Sudden sharp pain going across the middle of my back followed by limp and heavy arms. The pain has occurred 4-5 times over the past 6 weeks, but my arms and legs feel as though they are heavy, and my muscles are weak. I am 59 years old, in good health, not overweight. This scares me. My doctor said I had bacterial pneumonia for which she gave me an antibiotic and an inhaler over 2 weeks ago.

Optional Information:
Female, Age: 59, California

Already Tried:
I've completed the antibiotics (doxycycline hyclat 100 mg), partially used 2 inhalers (flovent hfa 110 mcg and proair hfa 90 mcg). I stopped the inhalers because one of them burned my throat (flovent). I rinsed my mouth after the use of the flovent, as well. When I have one of the episodes, I am weak feeling, and my arms are heavy. I am not usually ill, which is why I am so concerned.

Hi, Fernalto , You should consult a neurologist specialist to evaluate your symptoms .

Your symptoms could be caused by a middle back disk herniation ( in this condition , one disk slips over the other and the nerve roots located between these 2 disks become compressed ) .

For this reason , you could be experiencing your current symptoms .

Your doctor will perform a back MRI to confirm or rule out this condition .

Usually the initial treatment include antiinflammatory drugs and in some cases ,local steroid injections to relieve your symptoms . In some cases , surgery will be necessary to decompress the affected nerve roots .

Reply to DR. GERMAN's Post: I don't think your answer is correct simply because I have had surgery on my L3-L5 and the pain is not the same. The pain feels more internal that skeletal, and the heaviness in my limbs is not a tingling sensation...it is almost as though I have to consciously think about moving my arms to do so once I've had an episode. I hope that clarifies things a bit more.
