Question

My son is almost 11 months old and only

Sent to Health Experts July 01, 2006 1:08 a.m.

My son is almost 11 months old and only weights 15 lbs. He was 8.15 lbs when born but has not even doubled his birth weight. No matter what type of formula he was on, he has always spit it up. At his 10 month check up he only weigth 15 lbs so his doctor put him on whole milk and told us to give him at least 32 oz a day plus his other food. The spitting up isn't as bad but he still spits up and even after being on whole mile for a month he gained no weight! He has a great appetite and I'm so concerned about his weight that now the doctor is sending us to Little Rock for a Cystic Fibrosis test. I just want to know what else could the non weight gain be associated with and what are symptoms of Cycstic Fibrosis. We are facing a life altering situation and still can't get any answers. We were scheduled to go to our local hospital Thursday for them to do the test but after two attempts they could never collect any sweat...why would this be? Is this normal? Now we are having to go to L.R. and have not even been called back for an appointment. Please Help!!!

Optional Information:
Male , Age: 11 months

Already Tried:
We've done antibiotics and he currently has phenumonia in one of his lungs because from his chest x-ray one of his valves to his lungs points directly down into his lung unlike the other one which points straight across instead of down.

Wow! How scared you must be! Any time you don't have weight gain, it is a concern. It is called failure to thrive. It could be from malabsorption because of several causes. It could be that you and your husband have small genes or carry small genes and your son is growing fine according to his genetic makeup. Or,it could be Cystic Fibrosis (CF.)

CF is basically a chronic disease where all the body's secretions are really thick. It affects the whole body because there's a lot of vital areas of the body where if there is thick secretions, it could cause a problem: lungs, testicles, and bowel. Those are the major areas hit by CF. The sweat test will determine the CF diagnosis. The patient is basically sterile (unable to reproduce) and has to be on a special diet to keep the bowel healthy and a vibrating machine daily to keep from getting pneumonia and other complications.

I hope you will be able to get some answers soon. I wish you the best! I hope you have had your questions answered here too. If not, let me know!

It's the same answer as doctors and definitions have given me but I want to know what else it could be? I had no problems during pregnancy and other than a couple of ear aches he's had no major helath problems. And everything I've read talks about oily stools, how in the world do you know if a stool is oily or not?
