Hello,
Since the illness has persisted for two days and is not responding to cough medicine, I would recommend that you take him to the doctor or a urgent care clinic for an examination. Most likely he has common cold but other causes like flu, asthma, pneumonia etc, need to be ruled out during examination. Continue with current treatment and it may take upto a week for the symptoms to go away completely.
