Question

Birth control

Sent to Health Experts October 11, 2006 10:54 p.m.

This is complicated: I have been on the pill since I was sixteen, I'm now eighteen and have never had a problem with missing or anything. I have always been very regular and on time etc. Last pack of pills I wanted to get my period earlier, so on the saturday that the last pill is suppose to be taken I didn't take it, then I got my period normally except then I took the new pack a day earlier, following my plan. A couple days later I knew that I had to get back on track so instead of continuing the whole month one day ahead I skipped an entire day then got back on track. A couple days later I had some bleeding and have had this most of this pack, I have three pills left and should get my period this coming tuesday. Can you bleed lightly all month from doing something like that? I know it was stupid now...but I'm concerned now. I know there is something called implantation bleeding but I don't see how I could have produced an egg, and I got my period??HELP!!

Hello,

I don't think you are pregnant. What has happened is that when you skipped the pill, the level of hormones in your blood dropped low enough to cause bleeding. Although you did start the pills again, the hormonal imbalance caused at that point never fully recovered and you continued to bleed.

Skipping a pill can sometimes cause pregnancy, but if you have been regular in the previous months, this is unlikely.

Please continue to take the pills and wait and see if you have a period. If you do not get a period, please take a pregnancy test. If you do, then you can be sure that you are not pregnant.

I hope this helps.

Ok, so if I don't get a normal period after ending my pills take a test, is my birth control effective now or would you reccomend an alternative?

Hello,

Since your birth control has been quite effective since the last 2 years ( I presume that you are on the same pills since you were 16 years), then it should be quite effective again.

If you do not get a normal period, and the pregnancy test comes out negative, restart another pack, being careful to be regular and to take the pill at the same time. Sometimes the hormonal imbalance can take upto 3 months to settle down. Sometimes (which I believe will happen in your case) it can settle down in 1 month.

I hope this helps.
