Transmission of the virus to the newborn is very uncommon, occurring between 4-7 percent of the time, and it is higher in those who also have HIV. If the mother also has AIDS, the chances can increase up to 36 in 100, and even greater if you have both Hepatitis B and C. Women who have chronic hepatitis C usually have uneventful pregnancies provided that your liver disease is stable, and has not progressed. Procedures such as amniocentesis and and fetal blood monitoring via scalp catheter should be avoided as this entails a risk of spreading hepatitis C. If your labor and delivery is complicated in that there is a prolonged rupture of membranes, this can be associated with an increased risk of transmission. There is not enough evidence though to warrant having a c-section done over a vaginal delivery.

Treatment of hepatitis C is usually delayed until after birth, as both ribavirin and interferon, which are used for treatment, can cause birth defects.
